The automotive industry is one of the largest and most competitive in the world and Nice Biscuits understands that the desire for the car to look absolutely flawless is key to the brand in their campaign. During the Post Production every field must be perfectly finessed to output the best possible commercial. The car is the product and the key is consistency.

The edit has to match the tempo of the brief. A fast cut can look exciting giving the impression of speed – like the Ferrari in the Shell ad. Alternatively it could be a slower cut which gives the feeling of a smoother, comfier ride – as demonstrated in the Aston Martin ad. It all depends on the creative brief and the demographic audience.

In the grade we have to make sure the car stands out from its surroundings and most importantly that the colour tones looks consistent – especially as the production shoot might have been over a few days in several locations. This is done at Nice Biscuits on DaVinci Resolve by using lots of techniques.

However, one of the tricks would be using “power windows” to focus on specific parts of the car whether it’s the body, rims, brake pads or even a headlight. Anything can be brought out and dropped back. The backdrop of the auto commercial must also be worked on as it can be just as important in setting the mood or the brilliance of the car.

The finer details are finished in Flame during the online process. Here we can perform a range of screen enhancements. Large scale changes could well be a sky replacement which can take the unfortunate overcast day and add in a lovely bright blue sky. Smaller scale tweaks might involve simply removing a license plate or cleaning up a scratch on the side of the car to make sure it looks immaculate.

The attention to detail during Post Production can result in a piece that is absolutely epic and drives them straight to your brand.

McLaren

McLaren commissioned Black Diamond, who worked closely with us here at Nice Biscuits, to be the lead creative agency on their campaign for the global release of the beautiful 600LT. The thoroughly thought out and perfectly executed launch has, in fact, been McLaren’s most successful campaign to date, including over one million views of the commercial on YouTube alone.

Firstly, we started working on a test grade using DaVinci Resolve with a rough edit that was all shot on a DJI Osmo handheld camera. The purpose of this test shoot was to make sure we were able to get the right mood for this stylised commercial before the wheels were put in motion, pardon the pun. The main objective of this test was to see what was possible in the grade. Were we able to bring the car out from its background and vignette it to make it the focus? Were we able to achieve a “day to night” effect? The “day to night” effect is essentially, taking footage that was shot in the day (usually early hours) and manipulating the image in terms of brightness, colour tones, colour temperature and contrast. The finished result could take a shot that was cast with a warm sunrise tone and make if feel darker and cooler as if the moon wash shining brightly upon it. After a few hours tweaking the grade on the test shot, we felt confident we could achieve and deliver the creative brief.

Following the successful test, the shoot was confirmed and filmed in the Southern Californian desert. The edit had been cut and Nice Biscuits began the process of post production, starting with the grade. Creatively, there are two halves to this film. Firstly, the aim was to finesse the day-to-night style to enhance the feeling of the 600LT being a creature in the wastelands that had finally been awoken. The second half of the film was to make the 600LT look stunning against the back drop of arid flatlands and rolling mountains in the golden hour of the day. The crew filmed the sports car tearing around the race track over a period of a few hours which presented obvious challenges to our team. The grade had to be worked in a way to make sure it flowed consistently as if it was all filmed in the space of a minute – continuity was key! This was meticulously done to any shots that happened to be filmed in the later part of the shoot by using a few technical tricks such as dropping down the brightness, upping the contrast and manipulating in a warmer colour tone whilst isolating the car so as to not affect it’s tone.

Following the grade the commercial went in to the Online process. Here we use a software called Flame, where the team were able to pull in any shots that needed clean up and look at finalising the film with titles, laying back the audio and mastering. As with any automotive commercial, the clean up is crucial to help enhance and highlight the product itself – the car. We also needed to look at cleaning up any shoot equipment or crew in the shots, with our main focus being on the reflections of the car windows and shiny surfaces. A further challenge presented to us was that of the driver – where he was obvious, we were required to remove him from the shot to ensure that car felt like a sentient being.

Overall, the commercial presented a number of hurdles that our team thoroughly enjoyed overcoming to create a beautiful campaign, something that both McLaren’s and ourselves were delighted with.
